Oxford University vs Oxford Brookes: The Honest Comparison for International Students
Two universities, one city, very different experiences. Entry, teaching style, accommodation, costs, careers and social life compared without the marketing.
Every September we collect students for both universities from Heathrow, and the two groups have different first weeks. Neither is "better" for every person; they are different institutions that happen to share a postcode.

Teaching style
Oxford's tutorial system means writing an essay a week and defending it in a room with a world expert. It is intense, personal and exhausting. Brookes uses a more familiar model of modules, seminars and coursework with strong industry links and placement years.
Costs beyond fees
Living costs are the same city — see our Oxford budget guide. Oxford colleges include some meals ("formal hall") and subsidised accommodation for shorter terms (8 weeks × 3). Brookes halls run on 40–51 week contracts, which cost more overall but give you somewhere to live in the vacations.
Where you'll live
- Oxford University: college rooms in the centre or annexes; graduate students often in college-owned houses in Jericho or Summertown.
- Brookes: halls in Headington (walkable to campus) or private rooms in Cowley and Headington. Our where to live guide covers both.
Bank account, GP, SIM card, BRP/eVisa, registration, finding the right building. Our arrival packages work identically for both universities — the driver simply takes you to Headington or to your college lodge.
Careers
Oxford's brand opens doors globally and its careers service is excellent, but its graduates enter fiercely competitive pipelines. Brookes graduates in architecture, nursing, hospitality and engineering often have placement-year experience that employers value immediately — and many Brookes courses have direct routes to sponsored jobs. Our Career Hub lists sponsoring employers for both.
Social life
Oxford life revolves around the college: bar, dining hall, sports, balls. Brookes life revolves around Headington, Cowley Road and the Union's societies. Both have active Islamic, Pakistani, Turkish and Arab societies. Both are 55 minutes from London by train.
If you want the deepest possible engagement with a subject and can handle pressure, Oxford. If you want strong teaching, practical skills, a placement and better value, Brookes. Many of our students at Brookes say they would not swap; so do many at Oxford. Talk it through on a free call if you are deciding between offers.
