Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship 2026: Salary Thresholds & Finding Sponsors

Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship 2026: Salary Thresholds & Finding Sponsors

How to find UK employers who sponsor Skilled Worker visas, the 2026 salary thresholds, and how to move from your Graduate visa into sponsored work.

For most international students, the Skilled Worker visa is the route that turns a UK degree into a long-term UK career. It requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor, at or above a minimum salary, in a role that qualifies. The rules and thresholds are reviewed regularly, so checking the current figures before you negotiate an offer matters more than ever.

How Skilled Worker sponsorship actually works

  1. An employer must hold a sponsor licence from the Home Office — not every UK company does.
  2. They issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) tied to a specific role, salary and job code.
  3. Your salary must meet both the general threshold and the "going rate" for that specific occupation code, whichever is higher.
  4. You apply for the visa yourself using the CoS reference, proof of English and finances.

The threshold isn't one number

The headline figure (around £38,700 for most roles from April 2026) is a floor, not a target — many occupations have a higher going rate set by job code. New entrants under 26, or those on the Immigration Salary List, often qualify at a reduced threshold, roughly 70% of the standard rate. Always check the exact figure for your specific job code on gov.uk before accepting an offer.

Finding sponsors before you need one

  • Use the Home Office register of licensed sponsors, a public spreadsheet on gov.uk — searchable by company name or town, and the single most useful tool in this whole process.
  • Filter graduate-scheme applications to employers you already know are on the list; large consultancies, banks, the NHS and most Russell Group universities themselves are near-automatic yeses.
  • Ask directly at interview stage: "Does [Company] hold a sponsor licence, and would this role meet the salary threshold?" — a legitimate, expected question, not an awkward one.

Timing it around your Graduate visa

Most students move from a Student visa onto the two-year Graduate visa after finishing their degree, which allows unrestricted work with no sponsor needed. This buys time to find a sponsoring employer without visa pressure on day one. Plan to start applying for sponsored roles around month 12–15 of the Graduate visa, since Skilled Worker applications and internal approval processes at larger employers can take two to three months.

💡
Switching visas doesn't require leaving the UK

You can switch from Graduate visa to Skilled Worker entirely from inside the UK once you have a valid CoS — no need to return home and reapply. Keep your BRP/eVisa and passport details ready, as our BRP and eVisa guide explains.

Smaller employers and start-ups

A small company without a sponsor licence can apply for one — it typically takes 6–8 weeks and costs the employer, not you, several hundred to a few thousand pounds depending on size. If you have a strong offer from a company that isn't yet licensed, it's worth asking whether they'd consider applying, particularly if you're a strong hire they don't want to lose.

What doesn't count as sponsorship

Freelance or self-employed arrangements cannot be sponsored under the Skilled Worker route — the job must be genuine employment with a contract and PAYE payroll. If you're weighing freelance work in the meantime, read our rules on self-employment on a student visa first.

Our Career Hub maintains a filtered, regularly updated list of Oxford-area and national sponsor-licensed employers by sector, and our pricing page covers the visa-support add-on for students navigating the Graduate-to-Skilled-Worker switch.
