Getting Around Oxford: Buses, Bikes, Park & Ride and the Trains to London

Oxford is built for cycling and buses, not cars. Student bus passes, where to buy a bike safely, lock rules, the London trains and the apps that actually work.

Most international students never need a car in Oxford, and many never take a taxi after the first week. The city works on two wheels and two bus companies.

Buses

Two operators — Oxford Bus Company (including the Airline and park-and-ride) and Stagecoach — share a joint ticket zone. Tap in with a contactless card on both: daily fare capping applies. For regular travel, the SmartZone student pass is about £45 a month and covers both companies.

Key routes for students:

1, 5, U1 City ↔ Cowley Road East Oxford housing
8, 9, U1 City ↔ Headington Brookes, John Radcliffe Hospital
2, 14 City ↔ Summertown / Kidlington North Oxford

Use the Oxford Bus and Stagecoach apps for live times, or Google Maps, which is accurate here.

Cycling

The fastest way to move around. Cowley Road to the Radcliffe Camera is 12 minutes; Headington to the centre 20. Buy from Walton Street Cycles, Bike Zone, or the Oxford Brookes bike sale in freshers' week. Facebook Marketplace is fine if you check the frame number against the BikeRegister stolen list.

⚠️
Locks and lights

Bike theft is Oxford's most common crime. Use a D-lock through the frame and a wheel, lock to a fixed stand, and take lights off. Riding without lights at night is a £50 fine and genuinely dangerous. Helmets are not legally required but recommended.

Walking

The historic centre is largely pedestrianised. Colleges, libraries, the Westgate, the covered market and the station are all within 20 minutes on foot of each other.

Trains

Oxford station is on the west edge of the centre. Paddington in 55 minutes (GWR), Marylebone in about 70 (Chiltern, often cheaper), Birmingham in 65, Reading in 25. Buy a 16–25 Railcard (£30 a year, a third off) in your first week — it pays for itself in one London trip. Book on Trainline or the GWR app; avoid peak-time fares before 9:30am.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Uber and Bolt operate but surge at weekends. Licensed local firms (001 Taxis, Royal Cars) are reliable for early flights. From the station to Headington expect £12–£15.

Driving

Don't. Parking is scarce and expensive, the centre has bus gates with cameras, and a zero-emission zone charges some cars. If family visit by car, the Park & Ride sites (Thornhill, Redbridge, Pear Tree, Seacourt, Water Eaton) are the answer.
