Improve Your Academic English Fast: A 12-Week Plan for International Students

Passing IELTS is not the same as writing a 70-mark essay. A practical, week-by-week plan for academic reading, writing and seminar speaking that fits around a full timetable.

You passed IELTS with a 6.5 or 7. Then your first seminar happens at speed, with idioms, and your first essay feedback says "expression unclear". This is the gap between general English and academic English, and it closes faster than you think with deliberate practice — around 30 minutes a day.

Week 1–2: Diagnose

Ask a lecturer or your university's academic skills centre to mark a short piece and tell you the top three problems. Typical answers: article use (a/the), sentence length, hedging ("this suggests" rather than "this proves"), and paragraph structure. Fix three things, not thirty.

Week 3–6: Reading

Read one academic article a day from your reading list — but read it in a specific way:

  1. Abstract and conclusion first.
  2. First sentence of each paragraph.
  3. Then, and only then, the full text.

Keep a phrase bank: not vocabulary, but the sentence frames academics use. "This paper contests the view that…", "A further limitation is…", "Taken together, these findings…".

Week 3–12: Writing

  • Write 200 words every day about that day's reading. Not polished; just written.
  • Once a week, rewrite one paragraph three times: shorter sentences, then stronger verbs, then add a hedge.
  • Read it aloud. If you run out of breath, the sentence is too long.
💡
Use AI as a tutor, not a ghostwriter

Ask "explain why this sentence is unclear" rather than "rewrite this". UniLife's essay outliner and writing feedback are built this way: they show you the problem and the principle, so the next paragraph is better. Check your department's AI policy and declare use where required.

Seminar speaking

The fear is real and the fix is preparation. Before each seminar write three sentences: one summary of the reading, one question, one point you disagree with. Say the summary in the first ten minutes — early contributions are easier than late ones. Nobody expects perfect grammar in speech; they expect engagement.

Listening

Lecturers speak at 150–180 words per minute with regional accents. Record lectures where allowed, use the university's lecture-capture, and watch one UK news programme a day with subtitles on, then off.

It is a curve, not a wall

Students who do this for one term consistently report that seminars "suddenly" make sense around week 8. It is not sudden; it is accumulation. The Deadline Guardian can schedule your 30 minutes like any other commitment.
