Understanding Your Child's Progress at a UK University: A Term-by-Term Guide for Parents

What each term of a UK academic year usually involves, how to make sense of marks and feedback, and how a consent-based termly digest can keep families informed.

For parents, a UK academic year can feel opaque. There are no report cards, universities won't normally share marks with family, and a single piece of feedback can look alarming out of context. Knowing what each term typically involves helps you ask the right questions and support progress without adding pressure.

The shape of the year

Term names and dates vary — Oxford University, for instance, uses short eight-week terms called Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity — but most UK years follow a similar arc.

Autumn term

Settling in, first assignments and often formative (practice) work that doesn't count towards the final grade. Feedback in this term is about learning the UK style, so early marks may be lower than your child is used to.

Spring term

More substantial assessed work, with January exams at some universities. Students usually have a clearer sense of how they're doing and what markers expect.

Summer term

Exams, final assignments and, for master's students, the dissertation — often continuing through the summer. This is the highest-pressure period for many students.

Making sense of marks

UK marking uses the full scale differently from many countries. Marks above 80% are rare in many subjects; 60–69% is a solid 2:1, the classification many employers ask for. A 62 is not a disappointing result. Our explainer on how UK grading works covers classifications in detail.

💡
Ask about feedback, not just the number

"What did your tutor say you should do differently?" leads to more useful conversations than "What mark did you get?" and shows you're interested in progress, not just results.

Signs of healthy progress

  • Engaging with feedback and seeing marks rise across the year.
  • Knowing upcoming deadlines and planning for them.
  • Using university resources — office hours, academic skills support, the library.
  • A reasonable balance between study, work and social life.

Signs worth talking about

  • Missed deadlines or talk of resits.
  • Reluctance to discuss any academic work.
  • Mentions of extensions or mitigating circumstances without a clear plan.
  • Attendance concerns, which can also matter for Student visa sponsorship.

If a health or personal problem is affecting studies, universities have formal processes for extensions and mitigating circumstances. Encourage your child to use them early — see our guide to mitigating circumstances and extensions.

Good questions for the end of each term

  • What piece of work are you most pleased with, and why?
  • What did feedback suggest you work on next term?
  • Which deadlines or exams are coming up, and is there a plan for them?
  • Is there any support you'd like to use but haven't yet?
  • What would make next term feel more manageable?

Asked calmly at the end of each term, these questions build a habit of reflection that helps students long after their first year, and they give you a clearer picture than marks alone ever could.

ℹ️
Your child stays in control

UK students are adults. The most effective parental support is encouragement to use university systems themselves, rather than contacting tutors on their behalf.

How the Arrive UK online add-on helps

Our Termly progress digest for parents (£15/term) is a short written report sent at the end of each term, based on a review conversation with your son or daughter and anything they choose to share — such as feedback or upcoming deadlines. It covers:

  • how the term went academically and personally,
  • upcoming deadlines and assessments next term,
  • any support being used or worth exploring,
  • practical priorities for the term ahead.

The student signs up with you and agrees what's included; we don't access university records. It's entirely online and can be cancelled at any time. See our online services.
